A black stockinette doll with a great face and gray astrakhan hair. She is a single layer stockinette (stocking) doll when most often they are doubled layer as the maker realizes the white cotton showing through the one layer is not really black anymore but gray. This was cleverly handled by making her hair gray also. She is big and has a chunky body firmly stuffed. Her arms and legs are jointed so she sits easily. She has mitten hands with one that goes at a rakish tilt but her sweet face says no. She is all hand sewn and comes as found with her very early make-do all hand sewn calico dress. (If the sleeves don't fit cut them off.) She is 24" tall and is circa 1900.
