I have owned this doll for 30 or more years and I never found the right clothes for him and I like his looks without clothes. When I took the pictures today of him I suddenly thought, maybe it is a her and not a him. I am not sure and I guess it doesn't matter, I still like the doll without clothes. Roben Campbell made me appreciate the doll bodies when she exhibited my black cloth dolls collection at our local Historical Society. For that exhibit she researched black cloth dolls and then made a catalog to go along with the exhibit. (No Longer Hidden, 2007) Each doll was pictured with all the information about the doll. She had a page of black dolls without clothes to show how inventive mothers and grandmothers could be in making dolls for their children. It was then I started a more in depth appreciation for the construction as well as the ingenuity of the dolls bodies. This doll is all hand sewn, see pictures, the face is embroidered, (mouth and nose) and applicated, (eyes) as well as a formed face rather than the easier flat face. The nose protrudes in well executed manner. The sewing is naive at best but did the job. The talent was there but just not well perfected. The hair is applied pieces of pelt that has turned to a light pinky purple...can't even guess what it is but it works. The body is cute and in the shape of a figure eight and the stuffing is clumpy, either cotton or rags. The upper arms and legs are strips of cotton, the lower arms and legs are stuffed and lumpy. This doll is wonderful in all sorts of crazy ways making it forever fun to look at. GREAT FOLK ART.
20" tall and C. 1910-20 (P.S. Has a floppy head so a stand needs to go around the neck.)
